Creating a Navigation Menu

Module: Website Setup & WordPress Basics • Lesson: Creating a Navigation Menu

This lesson explains how to build a navigation menu in WordPress, assign it to a theme location, and organize your pages for easy user navigation.

What Is a Navigation Menu?

A navigation menu is a collection of links to key pages on your website. It helps visitors find important content quickly, usually appearing in the header, footer, or sidebar.

How to Create a Navigation Menu

You can create menus through either the WordPress Customizer or the Appearance settings. This lesson uses the Appearance method.

Steps to Create a Menu

  1. Go to Appearance → Menus.
  2. Click Create a new menu.
  3. Enter a name such as Header Menu.
  4. Click Create Menu.
  5. On the left side, check the pages you want to add (e.g., Home, About, Contact).
  6. Click Add to Menu.
  7. Choose a menu location (e.g., Primary Menu).
  8. Click Save Menu.

Organizing Menu Items

After adding items to your menu, you can rearrange and structure them.

To Reorder Items

  • Drag and drop items into your preferred order.

To Create Submenus (Dropdowns)

  1. Drag a menu item slightly to the right under another item.
  2. The indented item becomes a child or dropdown link.

Editing & Managing Menu Items

Editing a Menu Item

  • Click the dropdown arrow on a menu item to edit details.
  • You can customize the label (display name).
  • You can replace the URL for custom links.

Removing a Menu Item

  • Open the menu item settings.
  • Click Remove to delete it.

Adding Custom Links

You can link to external websites or internal pages not shown in the list.

  1. Click Custom Links in the left panel.
  2. Enter a URL and link text.
  3. Click Add to Menu.

Activity: Build a Header Menu

Complete the following tasks:

  1. Create a new menu named Header Menu.
  2. Add at least three pages to the menu.
  3. Arrange them in your preferred order.
  4. Assign the menu to the Primary location.
  5. Create at least one dropdown (submenu) item.

Assignment: Upload a screenshot of your completed menu in Appearance → Menus.

Navigation Menu Best Practices

  • Keep your menu simple—5 to 7 items is ideal.
  • Use clear, descriptive labels (e.g., “Services,” not “What We Do”).
  • Place your most important pages first.
  • Use dropdowns sparingly to avoid clutter.
  • Ensure your menu is mobile-friendly (check theme settings).
  • Update your menu whenever you add new key pages.
